UTP explores new sectors

2018 is all about growth and learning for UTP. The challenges facing the UK around the uncertainty created by Brexit is a key driver for UTP to step boldly into new sectors and new territories.

“UTP has historically welcomed international clients to its south coast manufacturing facility. As our new facility is fully bedded down, those visits remain very important to demonstrate our ‘through life’ approach to quality. This year, however, I am looking to shift that dynamic and invest more heavily in developing strong relationships by actively visiting both new and existing clients around the globe.” Says Martin Todd, Managing Director.

“We have a skill base and capability that is relevant to a large number of clients. Those clients are not all based in the UK and it is up to UTP to promote its skills and to find new opportunities. We are responding to an increasing number of RFQ’s and I’m delighted to see emerging opportunities in the medical sector and a deepening of our relationship and expertise in the nuclear sector as well.”

UTP will be attending the Singapore Airshow show in February as well the IADC/SPE Drilling Conference in Houston in March.

We would be delighted to discuss our skills and capabilities at these shows or to arrange a visit to our manufacturing facility in Lee-on-the-Solent, near to Southampton. Please do call Alan Knox 01329 232795 to better understand how UTP can meet your requirements.

December - Quality first - AS9100 Rev D

Following its latest audit UTP has secured the upgraded quality standard of AS9100 Rev D.

This standard is the most up to date version of the aerospace quality management system. Whilst Rev D has retained a large proportion of the previous quality management system it provides more focus on the risks and opportunities within the context of the organisation and encourages greater responsibility and management of externally provided systems and processes.

“Continuous improvement must be a core tenant of any engineering business. This latest standard encourages more decentralisation of the quality system with responsibility spread through out the organisation. I am very pleased with how the management team have responded to the new approach and look forward to seeing the benefits of this new standard flow through to our customers” says Martin Todd, Managing Director.

“UTP is also actively exploring new opportunities across a range sectors, from nuclear to large scale infrastructure projects, this quality mark provides a clear demonstration to those potential customers that UTP can be a trusted partner in their critical supply chains.”

December - Working with the next generation of engineers

UTP is excited to be building a strong relationship with the Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training or CEMAST for short.

“We know that there is a skills shortage in the UK for engineering. As a company with over 40 years sector experience finding, recruiting and retaining skilled engineers is at the heart of what we do”, says Martin. “For too long high precision engineering has not been seen as a valuable part of the UK’s skills base. Working with CEMAST we are looking to restore that balance by providing a high quality work experience for students at CEMAST. We hope to find and retain the best talent and nurture them as part of our commitment to become an employer of choice.”

During the visit the students were shown around the manufacturing facility and had a number of informative break out sessions covering not just manufacturing but also procurement, sales and marketing, customers, quality and wider economic issues facing the company and industry. The feedback from the students was very positive with the tutor reporting that their breath was taken away as to what a 21st century high precision manufacturing company is really like. Following the visit eight students have shown an interest in undertaking work experience with UTP.

November - Looking outwards – ADS membership for UTP

Martin Todd, Managing Director, is now a member of the premier trade organisation Aerospace, Defence, Space and Security Sector group or ADS for short.

“This is an important statement for UTP as it looks to broaden its network and expand its customer base”, says Martin. “As an active business across these sectors it is important that we fully understand how the sectors are responding to the latest challenges and what opportunities there are for UTP to apply its skills and engineering excellence.”

“A recent trip to Singapore highlighted the importance of stepping out in this uncertain world and reinforced the global opportunities there are for UK manufacturing and UTP in particular. I am looking forward to meeting more of the membership of ADS and working with them to unlock new opportunities both here and abroad”.

October 2017 - Martin Todd takes over as Managing Director of UTP

Universal Tool and Production Company (UTP) are delighted to announce that Martin Todd will take over from David Ferris as Managing Director, following David’s retirement in October 2017.

Martin joined the UTP Team as Business Development Manager in May 2017, from H+S Aviation Ltd., the military and commercial aircraft engine repair and overhaul business located in Portsmouth. During his 21 years there, Martin served as the business leader of the Propeller, GE and Field Services Programmes.

With over 30 years’ experience in the Aerospace Industry as a business leader, Martin is keen that UTP continues to be a supplier of choice for its core business in Oil & Gas and Aerospace, as well as branching out into new markets such as Rail, Military, Health, Automotive & Marine.

Martin says “UTP is known for its excellent customer service and product quality, and I intend that it remains the supplier of choice to many major Tier 1 customers. With the recent move to new, purpose-built premises we have the opportunity to grow our customer base, with new technology and equipment, as well as reorganising the team to ensure even greater customer focus and service”.

UTP was founded in 1952 and provides exceptionally high quality, precision-engineered parts to clients around the world. Specialising in low to medium volume production, prototype or pre-production precision engineering projects, in all ‘exotic’ materials to extremely close tolerances, UTP is regarded as a “global class” precision engineering company.

June 2017 - UTP relocate successfully

It is with great pleasure that we can announce Universal Tool and Production Company Limited successfully relocated to its purpose built new facility at the Daedalus Enterprise Zone on the 1st of March 2017.

The modern facility incorporates state of the technology and provides a great platform from which to grow the company. The 2000 square metres of manufacturing space has enabled us to centralise all operations and have additional space for expansion.

We are delighted to welcome Martin Todd to UTP, who joined us as the Business Development Manager in May 2017. As well as looking to consolidate and expand our interests in the Oil & Gas and Aerospace sectors, Martin will also be exploring suitable opportunities in new markets such as Nuclear, Rail, Military, Health, Automotive & Marine.

With over 30 years’ experience in the Aerospace Industry as a business leader, we will be looking to Martin to assist in increasing the diversity of UTPs market and customer portfolios; enhancing the customer experience and making UTP an Enterprise Supplier of Choice.

He joins the UTP team from H+S Aviation Ltd., located in Portsmouth. H+S is a provider of aircraft engine repair & overhaul services to commercial and military platforms. During his 21 years there, Martin served as Programme Director over the Propeller, GE and Field Services teams. During his successful tenure, he directed all operations, customer services and supply chain activities, being fully accountable for unit profitability.

More evidence of a commitment to quality - AS9100 Rev C Approval

We are pleased to announce that we are among the first in the UK to achieve ISO 9001:2008 AS9100 Rev C status.  This upgraded aerospace certificate demonstrates our production systems meet this exacting new quality standard. Together with our API accreditation, all customers from all industries now have the ultimate assurance of our continuing commitment to product quality.

Managing Director, David Ferris, comments “I am particularly proud of our achievement in attaining Rev C status so quickly - long before many of our competitors.  Where they focused on attaining the various stages of SC21 as preparatory work for Rev C, we went all out for full Rev C certification which we achieved in a very short space of time.”

Investment in new plant provides additional capacity to meet demand

We have successfully commissioned the latest additions to our plant, which, after 3 months of operation have already proved their worth.  From the Mazak stable, a Nexus 450M CNC turning machine with live tooling has been installed which enables machining work pieces of 350mm in diameter and up to 3 metres long. This machine has been specifically purchased to service our oil and gas clients and is the first of 4 intended new machines of this genre.

At the other end of the scale, a Delapena E2000S automatic horizontal honing machine adds significantly to our CNC grinding and honing capability on high precision parts such as spools and sleeves which are produced in quantity.

Says Managing Director, David Ferris, “Investment in these new machines demonstrates our continuing commitment to our customers to provide high technology capacity for their product at least cost”.

New premises and equipment enable more efficient manufacture of large parts

To create more production space at our Kiln Acre Works, we have recently taken over a further industrial unit of just under 7000 square feet to cope with increasing demand in the oil and gas sectors.  This unit, which adjoins our existing facility, was a considerable investment by the company as it required full fit-out from a skeletal shell and includes a 5 tonne overhead crane handling facility which runs the length of the unit.

We have also installed a large capacity band saw and a 5 tonne forklift for unloading delivery vehicles. This means we can actually handle much larger bars of material up to around 14 inches diameter.

Key to the investment in the premises and equipment is the ability to handle much larger material stock for more efficient processing of the bigger variants in the parts manufactured.
